The very first thing you need to do is fill out the free application called the FAFSA. This is what schools use to determine what type of financial aid you qualify for. Many students that come from low income families will qualify to receive federal pell grants. These are similar to student loans except that the student does not have to pay them back. If the student does not qualify for pell grants they will have the option to get student loans without cosigner.

There are two federal loan programs setup for this. These are the Stafford loan program and the Perkins loan program. Both of these do differ a little bit in the terms of the student loan, but both of these are student loans without a cosigner type programs. This means that regardless of the student’s credit or the parent’s credit history the student will qualify for the loans. This is the best option available to students today. If you still need additional funds then you only really have a couple more options. The first one would be to apply for as many scholarships as you can and hope that you get picked to receive one or two of them. If that doesn’t work then you will be left with the private student loans without a cosigner option. This is the most difficult of the loans to get, but it is possible to do so. Most banks will change the terms of the loans giving you a higher interest rate or a smaller amount of student loan money than they normally lend if you do not have a cosigner.
