For students that need money to pay for college there are really only three ways to go about doing so without having somebody to cosign on a loan with you. The first way is to take out a federal student loan, better known as a Stafford loan or a Perkins loan. Both of these loan types have specific limits on how much can be borrowed each year and the amount increases based on the level of the student has reached in college. A freshman is not allowed to borrow as much money as a senior is.

The second way that a student can get money for school, is with a parent PLUS loan. These loans are designed to help students that need additional funding to pay for tuition, books, and room and board. Students need not to worry if their parents have bad credit because even if the application is denied by the school it is still possible for the school to provide the extra funding to the student. This does require approval by the financial aid department of the school the student is attending.

The third way to get money for school without having a cosigner is to borrow money from a friend or family member. Obviously with college tuition being fairly expensive it may be difficult to find someone that is willing to loan you money for college. If you’re able to find somebody that has the available funds to loan you money for school and this can be an excellent way to get the money they need.

You now should have three very good options that you can pursue when looking to get bad credit student loans without a cosigner. Most people do not try to get the money they need because they are scared of getting denied, but the loan programs designed for students are set up to work without basing loan decisions on credit.

Let’s take a look at some of the things you need to do in order to get a student loan no cosigner to help you pay for college.  The first thing you need to do is fill out the free FAFSA application.  This stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid and is what determines what type of financial you will be eligible for.  After feeling out the application it will give you a EFC number which stands for Expected Family Contribution.  This is the amount that the student and parents are expected to contribute to the student’s education.  If this number is low enough it may be possible that the student will qualify for federal pell grants.  This is money that is given to the student and does not have to be paid back. 

After you have filled out the FAFSA and have been accepted to the school you plan to attend you will have the opportunity to apply for some federal loans.  These are the Stafford and the Perkins loans and neither of these loans requires any kind of credit check.  This is by far the easiest way to student loans no cosigner that you need to cover your college financial expenses. 

Another great option that you should always consider is that of applying for scholarships.  This can be a time consuming process, but the reward can be well worth it.  This would be another easy way to get a no cosigner student loan. 

The last way to get that loan you need to pay for school is with private student loans with no cosigner.  These are probably the most difficult to get if you don’t have any credit yourself being the student, but there are options available in the market place.  Usually to get a private student loan without a cosigner you would have to take on a high interest rate with the loan.  This may be worth it to you if you are in desperate need for those student loans no cosigner deals in order to pay for school.

Most banks will change the terms of the loans giving you a higher interest rate or a smaller amount of student loan money than they normally lend if you do not have a cosigner.
